Apply DOK to Your Concept-Based Learning Unit
While this is not the only time you'll have to apply your learning of Webb's Depth of Knowledge (you'll be joining the group you worked with during the 2013-2014 year to write a unit shortly), begin to review your own concept-based unit to evaluate the essential questions written in stage 1 and their placement within the instruction plan in stage 3. Do the questions meet the criteria to be defined as essential, and do they require students to think at the depth defined in the standards or even more deeply?
Begin to review the tasks or student prompts contained within your own concept-based unit, for both instruction and assessment, and evaluate the depth of thinking required for students. Does the prompt or tasks do two things: first, require (or exceed) the level of thinking specified by the standard or standards, and second, increase motivation and engagement of students?
What application of the Webb’s DOK will you make to the unit you’re currently writing and your daily planning and instruction?
